General procedures

(go to Outline)

Was the training adequate? A survey which weighs and measures children requires at least 3 days of training, even for experienced survey workers. Shorter training leads the reader to doubt the accuracy of the measurements taken.

Was the supervision of the teams adequate? What kind of communication between teams and the survey managers was there? If none, then different teams may have solved the same problem differently, leading to non-standardized survey procedures. Were data analyzed as soon as the teams returned from the field to check for consistency and believability?

How did team leaders function? Team leaders should have checked each data collection form for accuracy and completeness before leaving each household. They should have received training in supervision techniques.
