Nutrition - Indicators and their measurement
(go to Outline)
This section covers the indicators used to measure the presence and level of the various forms of malnutrition which are important in emergencies:
- Introduction to anthropometry
- Anthropometric indices
- Reference populations
- Calculation of percent of median
- Oedema
- Calculation of z-scores
- Adults and body mass index (BMI)
- Micronutrients - Clinical indicators
- Micronutrients - Biochemical indicators
- Calculating prevalence of malnutrition
There are many indicators of malnutrition, many of which measure different forms of malnutrition. This discussion will address just a few of these indicators which are of greatest use in humanitarian emergencies, including:
- The prevalence of acute protein-energy malnutrition in children less than 5 years of age
- The prevalence of chronic energy deficiency in adult women
- The prevalence of anaemia in young children, non-pregnant women, and pregnant and breastfeeding women
